Navigating the AI landscape

Since the start of this year, I have done a rather deep dive into the world of artificial intelligence. My PhD studies in educational technology have leant to my interest in this fast-changing and ever-growing technological trend. Something I have learned from research, podcasts, and webinars related to AI is how to navigate the language and framework of the subject. Here are a couple of helpful images to illustrate the AI landscape.

The term “Artificial Intelligence” is an umbrella term for the various related technologies. You can see from the first image that we wouldn’t have GenAI without something called “Deep Learning.” If you’re wondering when this change in technology took place (because we did not have AI as we do today even twenty years ago), I wrote a very short blog post about the 20th century path to artificial intelligence and included a couple of resources at the bottom. What it comes down to is the study of the human mind and the progression of computer technology, combined with decades of research, has produced this remarkable new ability in machines to learn.
